The Sri Lankan Bar Association has taken action against the speaker of the parliament and an 11-member select committee in opposition to an investigation into Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake involving allegations of abuse of power.

Bar president Wijedasa Rajapaksa said the organisation – which represents all the country’s lawyers and many of its judges – opposed the probe as the select committee refused to consent with a request of the Supreme Court to postpone any action until a constitutional interpretation was given on the impeachment procedure, reports the Business Standard.
The bar has now asked the Supreme Court to act immediately to stay further proceedings. Ms Bandaranayake has so far denied all allegations against her.
