Survey: lawyer earnings second only to doctors in US

A survey by company-rating and recruitment website Glassdoor has shown that lawyers in the US last year had a median base salary of $144,500.

The report listed 25 of the best-paid jobs in the country and showed that only physicians earned more, with a median base salary of $180,000. Also on the list were research and development managers ($142,120), software development managers ($132,000) and pharmacy managers ($130,000).

The survey also lists the number of job openings posted on the site for each of the top-earning jobs on the list. The job market for lawyers is relatively tight with 995 job openings, compared with more than 2,000 for physicians and over 4,000 for pharmacists.

According to Glassdoor, the report is designed to help people better understand which jobs pay the most, since 68 per cent of people report that salary and compensation are among their leading considerations when determining where to work.

‘This report reinforces that high pay continues to be tied to in-demand skills, higher education and working in jobs that are protected from competition or automation. This is why we see several jobs within the technology and health care industries,’ said Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor chief economist, in a statement.

However, Mr Chamberlain also noted that Glassdoor's research shows ‘that a big paycheck isn't necessarily tied to long-term satisfaction in your job,’ What matters is the company's culture and values, career opportunities and trust in senior leadership, he said.

Glassdoor considered job titles that had at least 75 salary reports shared by US-based employees over the past year. C-suite level jobs were excluded from the report. Sources: Glassdoor; Chicago Tribune
