The Devil's advocate dies in Paris

Colourful French lawyer Jacques Verges, known as “the Devil's advocate” has died in Paris.

The lawyer, who represented Carlos the Jackal, Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and helped former Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic with his defence against war crimes in the Hague, had a heart attack in the Paris bedroom of 18th century philosopher Voltaire, the BBC reports. A French-Algerian lawyer, his clients included both leftwing and rightwing terrorists, war criminals and militants.  He sued Amnesty International on behalf of the government of Togo and was also part of a team representing Saddam Hussein’s right hand man Tariq Aziz. He offered to defent Saddam if asked to. He called his autobiography ‘The Brilliant Bastard.
