Heading into the upcoming Republican convention as the party’s presumptive nominee for the White House, conservative provocateur Donald Trump has released a shortlist of candidates he will be considering for the US Supreme Court if elected to office. The all-Republican, consistently conservative, 11-strong list very much follows in the vein of the man whose seat on the Supreme Court the candidates will be hoping to fill, the late Justice Antonin Scalia. It is also made up entirely of current judges, with some surprised at Trump’s decision to shun litigators and private practice heavyweights and favour Midwestern candidates over those from the east and west coasts. The list is also notably light on diversity, with only three women making the cut and not one black or minority ethnic candidate.
