US firms head capital markets table for 2012 first quarter

American law firms Sidley Austin, Cooley and Davis Polk have topped the charts in a recent legal advisor review table, which also revealed an increase in the debt and equity capital markets.

The findings of the Thomson Reuters capital markets legal advisor reviews shows that the combined activity in the debt and equity capital markets topped $2 trillion for the first quarter of 2012, signalling an increase of 1.1 per cent in comparison to the total level of capital raised in the first quarter of 2011.

Straight debt

The review also shows that global straight debt totalled $1.8 trillion for the first quarter of 2012, representing a 4.7 per cent increase on a similar period in 2011. The total number of deals executed in the first quarter totalled 4,378, an increase of 28 on the comparable period last year.
The top issuer law firm for global straight debt in the most recent figures was Chicago-based firm Sidley Austin, which took part in 326 transactions totalling more than $40 billion. London-based magic circle firm Allen & Overy advised managers on 157 global straight debt issues worth $120.6 billion, amounting to a 24 deal drop compared to last year's figures.

Issuers

Californian law firm Cooley led the global equity and equity-related legal advisor to issuers category for the first quarter of 2012 with 20 offerings equating to a total value of $2.5 billion.
And New York-based Davis Polk led the charts for global equity and equity-related legal advisor to offering managers. The firm advised on 28 offerings amounting to $7.7 billion.
