General counsel salaries have increased in line with more responsibility and greater organisational clout, according to a survey of the top 100 best paid US heads of legal by Corporate Counsel magazine. Walt Disney general counsel Alan Braverman topped the group with earnings of $6,699,231 in total cash compensation and a total take-home compensation, including stock options exercised and stock value realised, of $12.188 million. Next on the list was General Electric's Brackett Denniston, who was the top paid GC in 2012 and 2013. In the last year his salary was $6.096 million including salary, bonus and nonequity incentives. Paul Cappuccio of Time Warner, Gerson Zweifach of Twenty-First Century Fox, John Finley of the Blackstone Group, Gary Lynch of Bank of America, Michael Luttig of the Boeing Co, Lawrence Tu of CBS, David Drummond of Google and Michael Fricklas of Viacom made up the rest of the top ten.
High paid women
The highest paid woman was Lockheed Martin’s Maryanne Lavan, with pay of $2.724 million. Other women earning over $2 million include Stacey Doré of Energy Future Holdings, Laureen Seeger of McKesson Corp (now at American Express), Sylvia Kerrigan of Marathon Oil, Laura Schumacher of AbbVie, Marianne Short of UnitedHealth Group, Sandra Leung of Bristol-Myers Squibb and Denise Keane of Altria Group.
