The former general counsel of Spanish fashion retailer Zara USA Inc has filed a lawsuit alleging racism and homophobia in the workplace. Ian Miller, who was head of the company's US operations for seven years, is claiming $40 million in damages for what he alleges were violations of both New York city and state labour and human rights laws. Mr Miller claims he complained to the top lawyer at Zara's owners, Spanish-based Inditex Group, but the conduct continued. He claims he lost his job after retaining employment law firm Sanford Heisler. In a statement Zara said it would respond 'strongly and vigourously' to the allegations and that it did not tolerate discriminatory or disrespectful behaviour.
