Australia urged to take lead on international drone laws

Australia is being urged to set up a world-leading legal regime in the fast-developing area of unmanned aircraft law by the Australian Certified UAV Operators Association (ACUO).

The Australian Law Reform Commission has loosely looked at the privacy issues in the past - but the ACUO has now submitted a detailed proposal to the House of Representatives. The plan would, according to the industry body, 'protect individual human rights while still facilitating industry growth'. The ACUO says: 'The proposed approach would see Australia’s existing Privacy Act and other extant national laws undergo minor modification to recognise that imagery, the primary output of unmanned aircraft used for commercial purposes, needs to be accorded the same status as data.'
