US cloud communications business Bandwidth has promoted Emily Harlan to general counsel, succeeding Brandon Asbill, who has retired from the role.
Harlan was previously deputy GC, initially joining in 2018 and leading dispute resolution and litigation. Since then she has taken on an increasing amount of leadership responsibility, including serving as its ethics and compliance officer.
Raleigh, North Carolina-based Bandwidth is a cloud communications company that provides voice calling, text messaging and emergency services to businesses.
David Morken, Bandwidth’s co-founder and CEO, said: “Emily is an exceptional lawyer, trusted adviser and proven leader who knows Bandwidth and our business deeply. Over the past eight years, she has earned the confidence of our leadership team and board through her judgement, integrity and ability to navigate complex issues.”
Prior to joining Bandwidth, Harlan practised at Nixon Peabody, where she served as outside counsel to Bandwidth. She started her career at the firm in 2008, before making partner in the 2017 promotions class.
She said: “I’m honoured and grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing to Bandwidth’s success alongside such a talented team. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Bandmates across the company for years, and I look forward to building on the strong foundation Brandon and our legal team have established.”
Asbill steps down as GC after almost six years with the company. He was previously assistant GC at software company Red Hat and M&A counsel at GE Energy before that. He will remain on at Bandwidth until the end of the year as GC emeritus and assistant secretary. The company praised Asbill’s role in helping build its legal function and expand its international footprint.
He said: “I’m incredibly proud of the legal team we’ve built and the role we’ve played in Bandwidth’s growth into a global company. Emily is exactly the right leader to carry this work forward. She has my full confidence, and I know the function is in exceptional hands.”
In other recent communications-related in-house moves, back in June Boost Mobile-owner EchoStar Corporation named Jeffrey Blum as acting chief legal officer, replacing Dean Manson who was retiring from the business.
