US discount store chain Dollar General is planning to promote Kelly Collier to general counsel when current GC Rhonda Taylor retires later this year.
Collier is currently assistant GC for business law and will succeed Taylor on 7 December. She will take over Taylor’s remit that involves overseeing the company’s legal team and other functions including compliance, internal audit, risk, public policy and government affairs.
Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based Dollar General operates more than 20,000 stores in the US and Mexico.
Collier joined Dollar General in 2009 as a senior attorney from Bass Berry & Sims, before taking on her role in 2017. As assistant GC, she oversees the company’s regulatory compliance, commercial contracts, business litigation, customs, IP and global compliance teams.
Taylor, meanwhile, is set to retire after 26 years with the company, having joined in 2000 from Ogletree Deakins as an employment attorney, eventually becoming GC in 2015.

She will remain on at the company until at least next April serving in a senior advisory role.
Taylor said: “I will be forever grateful for the opportunities afforded me over the past 26 years at Dollar General. Most of all, I am proud of the extraordinary teams I have been fortunate enough to lead and support, and of all they do every day to advance the company’s mission of serving others.”
In other recent in-house retail moves, back in July luxury home furnishings company RH hired Ryan Hassanein as chief legal and compliance officer from US healthcare business McKesson.
In March, Walmart hired Kirkland & Ellis partner Erin Nealy Cox as CLO, replacing Rachel Brand who left earlier in the year.
And in October last year, UK supermarket giant Tesco hired Jeff Langlands as GC of its UK and Republic of Ireland business from BT Group, where he was GC for its corporate, digital and networks division.
