The spate of cyberattacks on big companies and law firms has prompted general counsel to require stronger cybersecurity precautions from their external law firms. One company which has introduced greater rigour on this front is Marsh & McLennan. According to Bloomberg, the general counsel Peter Beshar has demanded that his law firms encrypt communications with the company. Mr Beshar has asked 12 of his largest law firms dealing with sensitive issues to communicate with the company though an encryption known as Transport Layer Security (TLS), The law firms, which include Cravath, Swaine & Moore, Davis Polk & Wardwell and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, have signed up for TLS.
