New York lawyers fight move to make it easier to sue foreign firms

The New York City Bar is among the opponents of a bill which would mean that foreign businesses operating in New York could be sued in the jurisdiction for acts that are carried out elsewhere.

New York is hoping to increase the amount of litigation that passes through its courts. But Lanier Saperstein, a New York partner in Dorsey & Whitney, said: 'This is a particularly unfriendly bill to foreign business.' As well as the New York Bar Association, the Business Council of New York State opposes the move. Foreign organisations are concerned about carrying out litigation in the US where the burden of the discovery rules can make the process particularly costy.
