The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) has decided to go ahead with a keynote speech delivered by a senior White House official - despite opposition by several members who claim the administration has been hostile to immigrants.

Cecilia Munoz, White House Director of Domestic Policy, is due to speak this week at the organisation's annual conference. A letter to the AILA, signed by 19 of them, says that Ms Munoz is 'one of the principal architects of shocking, widespread, and ongoing human rights violations against vulnerable children fleeing Central America. As such, she should not be elevated or rewarded with the most prominent speech at AILA’s annual conference'. The letter goes on to accuse her of being 'directly responsible' for 'causing children to suffer severe and prolonged physical and mental harm in detention centers in Artesia, New Mexico; Leesport, Pennsylvania; Karnes City, Texas; and Dilley, Texas'.

Holding the White House to account

However, the executive director of the AILA, Crystal Williams, confirmed that the invitation would not be withdrawn and said: 'What matters is that she [Ms Munoz] holds senior office in the White House, and thus can stand in front of a room of immigration lawyers and speak for the White House. And the White House must be held accountable for what it has done.' Source: FoxNews
