India in crisis over judicial delays

India spends less money on judges than anywhere in the world with many cases pending for over ten years and some 27 million pending overall.

Judicial delays in India are increasing with over 22 million cases pending in India's district courts, a report in the Guardian reveals. A further 4.5 million are waiting to be heard in the high courts whilst more than 60,000 are pending in the Supreme Court. Six million cases are pending for more than five years. India has one of the lowest judge to population ratios in the world with 13 per million compared to 50 in the developed nations. Only 0.2 per cent of the total budget was given to the law ministry, one of the lowest in the world.
