Simmons to close nine-partner office in Rome

After a 'detailed review', the 1,500-person Simmons & Simmons has decided it will run its Italian offering out of its Milan office in the north where it says the majority of its clients are based.

Partners will be relocating from the Italian capital to Milan, located in the business heartland of Italy. Colin Passmore, senior partner at the 22-office practice, said: 'We've looked at our business in Italy and we've decided that we can just as well consolidate by doing it all out of Milan. Most but not all of our clients are based out of Milan and it's just a business decision to consolidate what we're doing.'

Rome - undermined by its infrastructure

The decision is also a bad sign for the Italian economy, which has struggled to emerge from the financial crisis. It has not built up a widespread IT sector and Rome is itself a city with an unreliable infrastructure. Source: Legal Business
