Addleshaw Goddard has bolstered its corporate bench in London with the hire of a trio of partners from Pinsent Masons.
Corporate duo Julian Stanier and Gareth Jones have joined the firm alongside Roberta Markovina, a US-qualified lawyer who was head of US securities at Pinsents.
Stanier and Jones joined Pinsents in 2017 from legacy Berwin Leighton Paisner, where they were partners. They specialise in advising investment banks and corporate brokers and other intermediaries active in the London markets and internationally. They also advise corporate clients on corporate finance and public and private M&A matters.
Stanier’s recent work includes advising Ithaca Energy on its £2.5bn IPO and listing on the main market of the London Stock Exchange and acting for investment business Northern Gritstone, founded by the Universities of Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield, on its £215m fundraising. In 2021 he and Jones also acted for the brokers on the $470m AIM IPO and associated $213m placing of leading video games developer tinyBuild.
Meantime Markovina advises issuers, investment banks, selling security holders and investment funds on multi-jurisdictional offerings of equity and debt securities, as well as on cross-border M&A and aspects of compliance with US securities regulations. She also advises clients on New York law aspects of securitisation and finance transactions. Markovina joined Pinsents nearly seven years ago from Herbert Smith Freehills, where she was a senior associate.
The trio’s move comes off the back of a strong year of growth at Addleshaw Goddard, which increased revenue 12% to £495.6m and profit 14% to £210.5m in the financial year ending April 2024.
The growth spurt comes as it executes a strategy of rapid expansion in Europe, though it has also been adding to its ranks in the UK, including hiring a highly-rated team led by one of the UK’s top IP litigators, Geoff Steward, from IP boutique Stobbs in September. Earlier this month the firm also recruited debt finance partner Alasdair McKenzie in London from Gowling.
Addleshaws confirmed the moves, but declined to comment.
A spokesperson for Pinsent Masons commented: “We thank Julian, Roberta and Gareth for their contributions to the firm and wish them well for the future.”
Pinsents’ corporate UK revenues have risen 18% in the first six months of this financial year over the prior year, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. London lateral hires for the firm this year include energy corporate partner Jonathan Woolf from CMS, financial services corporate partner Peter McCusker from Royal London, where he was group deputy general counsel, and corporate real estate partner Jon Blackburn from Maples Teesdale.
