Alabama seeks to ban foreign law in its courts

There are fears that the proposed ban is simply an attempt to avoid Sharia law and six other states have enacted similar bans. Oklahoma passed such a ban in 2010 which expressly referred to Sharia law but it was struck down this year by a federal appeals court for being discriminatory. Only 16 states have not considered such measures. A report last year by the Brennan Centre warned that such bans could have unintended consequences such as disrupting marital prenuptial agreements or invalidating court decisions in other states.
