Ottawa: citizenship move

The latest development, according to a report in The Globe and Mail newspaper is that the 88-year-old has been stripped of his Canadian citizenship. Recently released court documents show that immigration minister Jason Kenney signed an order at the end of September revoking the citizenship of Ukrainian-born Mr Oberlander, who was naturalised in 1960.

Fairness principles

In response, Mr Oberlander has brought proceedings alleging the federal government has ‘breached principles of fairness required by law’.
The newspaper reports that Mr Kenney’s move is the latest in a string of legal attempts to deport Mr Oberlander. It says he has been in ‘legal limbo’ for the last three years when a federal appeal court ruled that before he could be deported, the Canadian government had to consider whether Mr Oberlander was forced to join a notorious German army unit renowned for atrocities during the second world war.
According to The Globe, this could be the last legal battle in the long running saga. It points south of the border to Pennsylvania where a few days ago another 88-year-old alleged former Nazi -- targeted for deportation by the US authorities -- died.
