Articles in The Economist and Above the Law have suggested that Am Law was incorrect to conclude that the six vereins in the listing performed worse than the other firms, on average. Above the Law quotes a defender of the vereins as saying: ‘AmLaw’s methodology here is sophomoric and shoddy, and the fact that they based the thesis of their writeup on an obviously flawed apples-to-oranges comparison is more so.’ The Economist defines a vermin as ‘a Swiss partnership that lets [law firms] maintain separate national or regional profit pools under a single brand’. A controversy surrounds whether DLA Piper and the others using this structure should be treated as if they were one firm.
