Mr Sewell, who is senior vice president of legal and government affairs, spoke at the George Washington Law School graduation event. He told the graduates they should focus on the goal of making the company successful regardless of the work involved and not just do the bare minimum. They should act with maturity in their dealings with colleagues and their boss, and adopt the professional maturity of a boss.
His third tip, ‘Understand the relationship between risk and consequence’ came from his former employer Steve Jobs and advises that one should evaluate the risks independently of the consequences. ‘No matter how small the penalty, if you are unwilling to commit or believe you will fail, you should say no. But don’t be intimidated or afraid to try just because the consequences of failure are great.’
His final tip was to assess co-workers as critically as the job itself and aim to be working with people better than yourself.
