Swiss bank UBS has picked up Barclays' managing director and general counsel for the Americas, Michael Crowl Yu Lan

Swiss bank UBS has picked up Barclays' managing director and general counsel for the Americas, Michael Crowl who will join the company in July. Mr Crowl takes over from Brent Taylor who was doing the job on a temporary basis and will go back to his original role heading up legal for wealth management and investment solutions. Mr Crowls had earlier worked as general counsel of Goldman Sachs' investment banking division.  Source: The Lawyer 

Energy group Avantha Group CG has appointed Ravi Rajagopal as its executive vice-president and global head of legal, governance and risk. Mr Rajagopal will also join the company's executive board. He will  direct the company's strategy and global deployment in the areas of legal, governance and risk as well as overseeing  the law, regulatory and corporate law framework globally. Mr Rajagopal has worked for 27 years in legal, secretarial and compliance roles in the financial services and power industry. He was earlier the General Counsel at Essar Steel India. Prior to this he headed up the legal function at Sterlite Industries (India).

Insurance company Sun Life Financial Inc has appointed Melissa Kennedy as its general counsel. Ms Kennedy, who was named the top corporate counsel in Canada in 2012 for work on with the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, will replace Tom Bogart who is retiring at the end of June. She will head up the company's enterprise legal, compliance and corporate secretarial functions.

Global renewable energy company Alterra Power has chosen Borden Ladner Gervais partner Shannon Webber as its new general counsel. Ms Webber, who is a specialist in securities, finance and M&A for power and mining companies, will join the company next week. She replaces the recently retired former chief legal officer Rupert Legge and will be based at the company's headquarters in Vancouver.

Edwards Wildman Palmer partner Nathaniel Gardiner has joined biotechnology company Enanta Pharmaceuticals as its general counsel. He was co-chair of  the life sciences department at the law firm since 2008.
