Ashlie Beringer, formerly a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, becomes deputy general counsel at Facebook in November. Colin Stretch, appointed in July, is Facebook's general counsel. Ms Beringer will take responsibility for regulation, litigation and particular product groups in the Facebook legal department, according to Compliance Week.
World Wresting Entertainment is appointing Laura A Brevetti as senior vice president, general counsel and company secretary. Her job will be overseeing 'the legal and business affairs of the company and serving as the principal legal adviser to the Chairman, CFO, and management team', according to a release from the organisation which is partly reproduced on the Stamford Daily Voice. She has 30 years of experience including litigation and arbitration in both the state and federal systems. She has worked for the US Department of Justice and, more recently, was in private practice at K&L Gates. World Wresting Entertainment is based in Stamford.
A partner at Texas-based Vinson & Elkins, Marcia E Backus, is taking up the posts of general counsel and vice president at Occidential Petroleum Corp. The appointment to the New York Stock Exchange-listed company started on 1 October. Ms Backus was head of the Vinson Energy Transactions/Projects Practice Group - working on a range of national and international mergers, joint ventures, acquisitions, projects and other transactions. She studied at the University of Texas and is the co-founder of the Texas School of Law's Center for Women in Law, according to the Oil & Gas Financial Journal.
Jennifer Treese Wilson has been appointed to the new role of corporate counsel at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). She will, initially at least, be working to support the GIA's worldwide education programmes for jewellery and gem professionals, according to Diamonds.net. With a law degree from the University of San Diego and experience to partner level in San Diego law firms, Ms Wilson has also been working in the education sector (at Alliant International University).
