The Australian Lawyers Alliance has condemned new rules which prohibit Community Legal Centres from using government money to advocate for policy or law reform. The ban, which comes into effect this week, is ‘extraordinarily disheartening’ to lawyers working in the sector, ALA president Geraldine Collins said in Lawyers Weekly. She said CLCs represented the most vulnerable people in society but had effectively been told to keep quiet. She said community lawyers were in a unique position to observe the impact of government policy and laws and were well placed to comment on reform measures. Source: Lawyers Weekly
