The deal is expected to close in the first quarter and will formalise the partnership between the two firms, which have a long-running history of collaboration. Cognition co-founder Joe Milestone commented that the firm is 'thrilled to now officially be part of Axiom's mission to modernise the legal industry.' According to a statement announcing the deal, Cognition's corporate arm will offer Axiom a valuable pathway into Canada's legal services market. Currently, Axiom boasts 1,500 lawyers, professionals and process engineers across three continents. The new Toronto hub will be Axiom's sixteenth office and its sixth venture outside the US.
A 'lean law' alternative
Cognition was founded by Joe Milstone and Rubsun Ho, both former vice presidents of legal at major law firms, as an affordable 'lean law' alternative for start-ups who can't front the cash for law firms or full-time in-house counsel. Following Axiom's acquisition, Cognition will split into two separate entities: Axiom Cognition, an Axiom corporation that will service larger companies with established internal legal departments, and Caravel Law, which will offer services to small and medium-sized enterprises that lack in-house counsel.
