Barclays is looking to fill the vacant position following last week’s news that longstanding legal chief Mark Harding is standing down.

Race leaders

The Lawyer newspaper reports that Mr Shaw, a former Herbert Smith partner and currently deputy general counsel, is leading the race for the top job along with current global general counsel for corporate and investment banking Ms Shepherd, a former Stephenson Harwood and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.
Others reportedly in the running, including Erica Handling (GC Barclays Capital), Mark Campbell (head of banking at Clifford Chance), Malcolm Sweeting (senior partner at CC) and Stuart Popham QC (vice-chairman of EMEA banking at Citigroup).
Simon Hall, a finance partner at magic circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, has ruled himself out.

Vanilla appoitntment

The Law Absolute web site suggests that new Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins will likely opt for an in-house appointment, which is seen as the safer option under the current challenging circumstances. One City professional described said the bank is looking for as 'vanilla or non-controversial' a legal chief as can be found.
