Black lawyers still in minority in S Africa

Black lawyers make up just 37 per cent of South African lawyers, a statistic which is reflected in the largely white legal teams participating in the Oscar Pistorius trial.

Statistics from the Law Society of South Africa show that, of the 22,000 practising lawyers in the country, the black proportion has risen slightly from 32 per cent in 2008. Lawyer Michael Motsoeneng Bill said: ‘The rhetoric has been that there was room for all of us, but it created too high an expectation….Out of ten, I would give transformation (of the legal system) a three, a well-considered three.
