Oscar Pistorius is on trial for murder. The complaint was made by a former commissioner of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, Jan Landman. Mr Landman is concerned that the use of the word ‘liar’ might have infringed the athlete’s right to a fair trial. Mr Landman is reported to have said: ‘It is in the public interest that the Human Rights Commission as a matter of urgency should investigate to what extent the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of SA (Chapter 2) is contravened.’
Witness
The SAHRC has said that it is assessing the complaint in order to inform the complainant if it will investigate. Judge Thokozile Masipa - who will be deciding the verdict on her own - reprimanded the prosecutor after his comment. She said: ‘Watch your language, Mr Nel. You don’t call the witness a liar, not while he is in the witness box.’ Source: iafrica.com
