Putin wins more power over prosecutors

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been given powers to appoint and sack regional prosecutors.

Reforms to the legal system which have just been voted in also include the abolition of the highest tier of the commercial court. Businesses and lawyers have been dismayed by the changes. One anonymous senior official in a local arbitration court told The Financial Times: 'Getting rid of the highest organ will severely weaken the system of commercial courts. It makes it even more likely that the courts will be used against businesspeople who fall foul of the Kremlin.' Source: Financial Times
