Lawyers in Russia are up in arms over a court reform which they claim would dismantle the country’s arbitration system.
Over 80 law firms have signed an open letter opposing the move to merge the Supreme Arbitration Court which deals with business disputes with the Supreme Court which handles criminal and civil cases, according to RTT News.
The lawyers are claiming it will abolish what they say is the most progressive branch of Russia’s judiciary. The letter said that the arbitration courts were much more transparent, independent and modernised than the ‘parochial.’
Lawyers fear that the reform of the courts would see businesses move their disputes to other jurisdictions. Source: RTTNews.com
