A spate of military lawsuits in the UK is bringing human-rights law into question. Following the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, there have been two public inquiries, over 200 judicial reviews and over 1000 damages claims against the Ministry of Defence, costing some £85m, as soldiers and their families sue the government. Increasing numbers of 'duty of care' lawsuits are being filed - where the families of soldiers, killed on active service or when training, sue with government. The result is that human rights law is pitted against the laws of international combat. Source: The Economist
