Canadian lawyers push risk management skills

Canadian Lawyer magazine reports that this year’s In-House Counsel Barometer Survey revealed a whopping 72 per cent of respondents highlighted risk management as the area they help with most. Around 45 per cent of respondents spoke of helping their team achieve strategic and operating objectives, while 42 per cent mentioned providing strategic advice.

Strategic value

The survey, which took the views of 236 members of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA), also found that around a third of those polled believed their department has grown over the past year and the same number felt their staff would increase over the next three years.
Although the vast majority went on to recommend the in-house career path, there was a significant drop when asked about satisfaction with current roles. This was mainly attributed to daily operation work leaving little time for providing strategic value, while lack of promotion opportunities was also a major bugbear.
