Mr Groia is well-known for having successfully defended John Felderhof, the only person who was charged in the famous billion dollar Bre-X mining fiasco of the 1990s. But the Law Society, the regulator, claims that his behaviour was so extreme in that case that he merited a two month suspension. Mr Groia has said, however: ‘There have been few cases, if any, where the (society) has been so dogged and determined to maintain a position that was so damaging to the public and profession as a whole.’ On judge in the case accused him of being ‘prone to rhetorical excess and sarcasm’ and ‘petulant invective’.
