The amendments to its 1989 Environmental Protection Law will enable the authorities to shut polluting factories, punish officials and protect areas from industrial development. The proposals should be ready by the end of April or early May. Cao Mingde, professor of law at the China University of Political Science and Law, said: ‘(Upholding) environmental protection as the fundamental principle is a huge change, and emphasizes that the environment is a priority.’ Source: Reuters
