China's consumer laws modernised after 20 years

Consumers have been given extra powers, and specific rules have been added in the online sector, in the country's biggest overhaul of consumer protection in two decades.

China introduces an updated Consumer Protection Law argus

The Consumer Protection Law has just been revamped. The moves are also a way of stimulating the domestic demand that is a central part of the People's Republic's growth plans. Launching the change, Jia Dongming, director of the civil law working committee under China's Standing Committee, said, according to The Business Standard: 'Strengthening consumer confidence will benefit the whole nation's economic development and boost domestic demand.' Amendments to the 1993 law include raising consumer compensation levels and increasing maximum fines on retailers.
