The Consumer Protection Law has just been revamped. The moves are also a way of stimulating the domestic demand that is a central part of the People's Republic's growth plans. Launching the change, Jia Dongming, director of the civil law working committee under China's Standing Committee, said, according to The Business Standard: 'Strengthening consumer confidence will benefit the whole nation's economic development and boost domestic demand.' Amendments to the 1993 law include raising consumer compensation levels and increasing maximum fines on retailers.
