Ms Ni, disabled after police beatings, has just been released after spending 18 months in jail for 'causing a disturbance and fraud', according to Reuters. She became famous internationally for defending people who lost their homes to make way for the 2008 Olympics developments. Fellow activists claim that the charges against her - and her husband who was also jailed - were trumped up.
Homeless
She plans to sue over the return of some of her assets and also over the fact that she and her husband were held during their trial in a run-down hotel without water and electricity. 'It is useless to fear, since we're already deprived of our rights,' she told Reuters on the phone. 'If we don't fight for rights, we will just have to wait for our death. I want them to return my assets. They've torn down my home without giving any compensation, leaving us homeless.'
