Cooley takes Amazon brief from Edwards Wildman in new London office

The retail giant's trademark and competition work has effectively transferred over to the Cooley office, which opened in January, in the arms of two Edwards Wildman partners - giving Cooley a priority spot on Amazon's European legal adviser panel.

The coup for 850-lawyer firm Cooley was to persuade Becket McGrath and Nicholas Bolter to switch from Edwards Wildman to the new Cooley office in London. When they came over, they were in a strong position to bring their clients too - and these included Amazon. Cooley already worked closely with Amazon in the US. The London Cooley office has already consolidated its gain - sending trainees on secondment to the Slough HQ of Amazon in the UK.

The Cooley relationship with Amazon is run from its Seattle office by the Seattle head, the transactions specialist John Robertson. When the Cooley Seattle office moved to larger premises in 2013, he linked it to 'the vitality of the technology and life sciences sectors here', specifically mentioning how the business district it was based in had been expanded ' in large part by Amazon's investments'. Sources: The Lawyer and Cooley
