Dentons starts talks with 21 firms over potential mergers

Dentons, already the world's largest law firm, has confirmed to The Lawyer magazine that it is in non-disclosure agreements with 21 firms in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

One aim is to start a presence in areas where it is not represented - Latin America, Japan and Australia. A second aim is to build strength in some places where it already has representation - including Germany, Spain and the Netherlands, The Lawyer reported. Whilst acknowledging that most of the talks would not end in merger, spokesman Joe Andrew said that the firm - which is roughly 50 per cent bigger than second-placed firm Baker & McKenzie - is also planning expansion on practice lines and intends to fill gaps there by lateral hire as well as merger.
