Legal research and AI firm Doctrine has agreed to acquire Spanish legal information provider Maite.
The deal marks Paris-based Doctrine’s fifth acquisition, or strategic investment, over the past three years, powered by a 2023 majority growth investment from Summit Partners and Peugeot Invest.
Maite has established itself as a major player in the Spanish AI legal market since it was founded in Barcelona two years ago by its three-member team of CEO Alejandro Castellano, CTO David Garcia and CMO Alex Rodriguez.
Its product offerings include a legal co-pilot, which organises cases in individual chats, alongside the uploading of multiple documents. It also operates a private legal knowledge base.
The firm says it has 2,000 customers, including solo practitioners, large law firms and corporate legal departments.
Doctrine’s CEO, Guillaume Carrère, said: “By integrating Maite, we are consolidating our position as the European leader in legal AI. As the global AI market rapidly takes shape, our ambitions continue to focus on building a trusted European leader grounded in technological sovereignty.”
Alejandro Castellano, CEO of Maite, said that joining Doctrine gave his firm the “scale and stability necessary” to consolidate its leadership in Spain, and confirmed that it will retain its brand, headquarters and team.
He added: “By combining our technology with that of the European leader, we can offer our clients an even more robust solution, backed by 10 years of industry expertise. This new chapter deeply respects our identity.”
Founded in 2016, Paris-based Doctrine is a prominent legal research and case analysis platform.
In 2023, it acquired legal and financial information database provider Legaltile and fellow French outfit Jobexit, which specialises in employment contract terminations.
Last year, it entered the German market with a minority investment in legal information provider Dejure, with a view to potentially making a full acquisition at a later stage.
It followed this up with the acquisition of French AI-driven legal software and database specialist Predictice.
