In the case that the Association's professional guidance committee was deciding on, a partner had left a firm to start his own practice, taking some of his clients with him. He wanted any emails that went to his old email address to get an automatic reply saying that he had left. However, the committee ruled that he had no right to insist on that. Its ethics rules allow the firm to read all the emails going to the ex-partner's account. On the other hand, the committee did say that the old firm, if it read his emails, would have to forward to the ex-partner any emails that were clearly meant for him, according to Bloomberg BNA.
