In total, the firm has promoted 16 partners worldwide in the latest round, down from 17 promotions last year. Of them, five hail from London and six from offices in Continental Europe. The focus on Europe marks a change from last year, when Freshfields focused on talent in Asia and selected around 40 per cent of its new partners from the region. Asia missed out on a single promotion this year, while the US and the Middle East secured three and two promotions respectively.

Included in the latest round is Vikki Hills, Freshfields’ first real estate partner promotion in London since 2008. Globally, corporate partners continued to dominate Freshfields’ promotion picks, along with those focused on finance and dispute resolution. The firm has been scaling back the number of partner promotions on offer in recent years, in what some have reported is an effort to boost profitability by curbing the size of its partnership.

Of the 16 new partners, five (or around 30 per cent) are women. This is more than double the percentage of women in the broader partnership, which currently sits at around 13 per cent. Source: The Lawyer
