The research, which was conducted by UK law firm Bond Dickinson, revealed that 71 per cent of general counsel surveyed, said that the enhanced focus on governance has had an impact on business which has changed the role of one in three general counsel. M&S legal head Robert Ivens said that he was “of the absolute conviction that sustainability is inextricably linked to business performance’ and that ‘It had to become part of the DNA of the organisation.” AIG EMEA general counsel Chris Newby said responsible growth was an essential foundation for sustainable, profitable growth. “Not all profits are equal..’it may be legal but we’re not going to do it’ is a difficult conversation to have with a business head when a profitable line of business no longer sits comfortable with our corporate values, but it is a necessary one.”
