If external spend is high, legal departments should consider actions other than outside counsel management, according to GC management consultant Rees Morrison. Writing in his blog, he says that general counsel should also take a look at whether the number of internal staff is adequate since too few in the legal department may up costs with external counsel. He also advises looking at ‘how cleints use the law department, since if they ask for services that consume too much time or inappropriate services, there will be more need for outside counsel.’ Source: General Counsel Metrics
