The New York Times says the organisation’s ‘legal department has become the focus of a broad internal inquiry into how the company handled the issue’. A review of documents is said to ‘paint a different picture’ of that put out by the company in the past - that only ‘a handful of midlevel employees’ knew about the problem. Instead, the document review is believed to suggest that ‘high-ranking officials, particularly in GM's legal department, led by the general counsel Michael Millikin, acted with increasing urgency’ over the last year to deal with the issue.
