GM moves to settle ignition switch death and injury claims

General Motors has paid US$900m to end a US criminal investigation into its handling of the ignition switch issue. It has settled some 1,385 civil lawsuits relating to deaths and injuries caused by some of the 2.6m vehicles affected.

The auto manufacturer admitted that it failed to disclose to regulators on a timely basis the 'lethal safety defect' American Spirit

Lead plaintiffs' lawyer Bob Hilliard said: 'Lives were taken and families were devastated, and there is no way to ever change that sad fact. Still, this agreement will allow some healing, as GM recognises, through its payment of financial compensation, the needlessness of this enormous national tragedy.'

Delay and deception

As General Motors made its agreement to pay, US transportation secretary Anthony Foxx said: 'General Motors not only failed to disclose this deadly defect, it actively concealed the truth from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the public.' He said that the US$900m sum has been agreed to show the US public that delay and deception are 'unacceptable' and that the price for engaging in such practices is high. Source: ABA
