General Counsel Michael Millikin has put a legal adviser at work on a project with the global heads of safety and vehicle management in order to share information more quickly, according to one source. Further changes are expected to be put in place by the 65-year old Mr Millikin. Although he is of traditional retirement age, Mr Millikin is said by GM to have no ‘current plans to retire’, remaining in post ‘at an important time for the company’.

James Butler, a lawyer from Columbus, Georgia, who has challenged GM on defects over a period of 25 years, says: ‘Corporate counsel is a reflection of management. You have to change the whole culture.’  GM lawyers are said to have tried to bury an internal memo  which calculated the cost to the business of fire deaths caused by fuel issues, according to documents seen by Bloomberg News.
