According to Tech Week Europe, the European Commission is satisfied with Google’s amendments, which will see the search engine clearly label its own services when presenting search results.
The agreement would be legally binding for five years, with a third party overseeing compliance.
Non-starter
The agency has been overwhelmed by calls from competitors to crack down on Google. However it is reported that Google will not be changing the algorithm it uses to produce results.
Although the proposal looks set to alleviate the concerns of regulators, Google’s rivals are still unsure over the effectiveness of the plan.
David Wood, a lawyer for Brussels-based industry group ICOMP told The Daily Telegraph: ‘If what is being proposed is labelling or a modified form of labelling. Frankly that’s a non-starter. We haven’t seen the proposals and the commission hasn’t explained them to us. We’re in the dark.’
