Kaye Scholer faces trying times after indictment of Shkreli lawyer

It remains to be seen how the law firm Kaye Scholer will treat its partner Evan Greebel, the former lead counsel of pharmaceutical company Retrophin who has been indicted alongside its former CEO Martin Shkreli.

Mr Shkreli became notorious earlier this year when a company he founded, Turing Pharmaceuticals, raised the price of a drug more than 55-fold. He is charged with securities fraud for orchestrating three interrelated schemes, one of which was a scheme to misappropriate Retrophin’s assets. Mr Greebel is charged with wire fraud conspiracy for his role in the Retrophin scheme.

‘Deeply concerned’

Kaye Scholer has issued the following statement: ‘We are deeply concerned that these charges have been made against Mr Greebel. He has been with us for a relatively short period of time, and all the alleged activities occurred before he joined the firm. We are conducting our own internal investigation, and based on our findings we will take appropriate action. In the meantime, we cannot comment on an active federal investigation or on our internal investigation.’

As of Monday morning, Mr Greebel was no longer listed as a partner on the firm’s website. Sources: Bloomberg BNA; The FBI; Forbes; Kaye Scholer
