The Pew Research Center reveals that only 18 per cent of Americans feel that lawyers contribute ‘a lot’ to the well-being of society, making them the least liked and appreciated profession in the US. The research is a barometer of public esteem and how different professions are viewed and is topped by the military who got 78 per cent of the vote and teachers 72 per cent with medical doctors coming third and scientists fourth.Lawyers were also beaten by journalists and business executives who score higher on their contribution to society. Lawyers have also seen their ratings fall over four years. A similar survey in 2009 saw 23 per cent of Americans voting in favour of lawyers.
