While Led Zeppelin band members Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were found not guilty of plagiarising Spirit's song “Taurus” in June, Judge R Gary Klausner ruled there was no evidence that the estate of Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe ‘harboured nefarious motives.’ The estate was therefore not obliged to repay the band's legal fees.
Legal fees not covered
Page and Plant, along with their publishing company Warner/Chappell, sought to recoup $793,000 following the verdict, claiming that their insurance company would not cover the legal fees as the copyright claim was so old. But although the judge acknowledged that they had been successful at trial and shown a right to compensation, ultimately it was up to his discretion and he sided with Wolfe's trustee.
