Mr Garcia crossed into the US from Mexico with his parents when he was 17 months old, but was told he could not join the California bar after graduating from Chicago State University and Cal Northern School of Law because he had indicated in his application that he was in the country illegally.
Meets requirements
The Los Angeles Times reports the state bar has certified that Mr Garcia meets all necessary requirements for admission, and the caucus has submitted a brief urging the court to allow the 35-year-old to join.
‘Any student who has proven their contribution to the public good by earning an education and becoming a productive member of society deserves the opportunity to realise their full potential,’ assemblyman caucus chairman Ricardo Lara, told the newspaper.’
Fellow state assemblyman, Luis Alejo, agreed: ‘Qualified undocumented students and graduates should be granted a law licence so that they can become future leaders in the legal profession.’
